Under the direction of the Director of Emergency Services, the incumbent’s The Deputy Fire Chief is a Chief Operational Officer for the organization performing administrative coordinating and operational emergency roles. This position is responsible for the management of Operations and Communications of the Department of Emergency Services. The goal of the position is protecting life, property, and environment through proper fire prevention and suppression, medical services and other emergency services as required and to provide our citizens’ with professional and competent emergency services personnel in order to protect life and property through efficient and well structured fire, ambulance and dispatch services.
In addition, this position is responsible for the compliance and enforcement of codes, by-laws, standards and regulations; including occupational health and safety pertaining to fire, ambulance and dispatch services.
The successful candidate should possess the following:
Minimum Level of Education/Training:

  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer II – Certified
  • Emergency Medical Responder – Certified
  • Firefighter 1 and 2 with Hazmat Operations (NFPA 472 or 1072) – Certified (NFPA 1001)
  • Proof of Grade 12 completion
  • NFPA 1002 Fire Apparatus Driver Operator
  • NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor II

Minimum Level of Experience:

  • 7 – 10 years progressive experience as an Incident Commander including experience as a fire service officer, fire service Instructor, participating in pre-hospital medical care, acting as and peer responder. Addition concurrent experience in administrative and operations management activities is required.
  • 3 yrs. Experience in operational, financial management (especially with volunteer firefighters)
  • Certifications in the safety related courses as outlined in the minimum level of education above to meet the requirements also set by WSCC
  • The ability to speak and write in English

Assets:

  • University or College Degree, BA
  • Previous Experience as a Chief Officer
  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer III and IV – Certified
  • Fire Inspector I (NFPA 1031)
  • Live Fire Instructor (NFPA 1403)
  • Fire & Life Safety Educator (NFPA 1035)
  • NFPA 1006 Technical Rescuer (rope rescue & auto extrication)
  • PCP or higher Medical Certification
  • Critical Incident Stress or Mental Health First Aid Training
  • 5 yrs. CISM Peer Responder
  • The ability to speak and write in Inuktitut and French

  • Clear Criminal and Vulnerable Sectors Record Check
  • Valid Class 3 Drivers Licence with Air Brake Endorsement or equivalent with Driver’s Abstract reflective of no more than six points within the last three years

Equivalencies that include a combination of education, knowledge, skills and abilities to formal education may be considered.
The annual salary for this position is between $125,837.03-149,454.91 plus an annual settlement allowance of $22,378.25 and an excellent benefits package.
