Backend Engineer Job in Germany – Relocation & Visa Sponsorship Available

Senior Backend Engineer Job in Germany - Relocation & Visa Sponsorship Available

Job Position: Backend Engineer Job in Germany – Relocation & Visa Sponsorship Available
Company: The Exploration Company
Location: Munich, Germany

a lot of backend jobs out there are just spinning up the same old CRUD apps for banking or e-commerce. If you’re a Python dev who wants to build something that actually matters—like helping launch a reusable, refuelable spacecraft into orbit—we should definitely talk.

We’re The Exploration Company, and we’re looking for a sharp Backend Engineer to join us in Munich. If you need to relocate to Germany, don’t worry about the logistics—we provide full visa sponsorship and relocation assistance to get you here smoothly.

The Project

We are building Nyx, our modular space orbital vehicle. To make this happen, our rocket engineers on the ground need a massive amount of data at their fingertips. That’s where you come in. You’ll be working on our internal data management platform—building the robust, scalable backend tools our engineering teams use every single day to design space tech.

The Tech Stack & What You’ll Do

We move fast, iterate quickly, and love clean code. Your day-to-day will look something like this:

  • The Python Core: You’ll scale and evolve our production FastAPI backend, handling REST APIs for authentication, file processing, search, and AI workflows.
  • Real-Time Sync: You’ll jump into our real-time collaborative editing service, which runs on Node.js, Hocuspocus, and Y.js.
  • Data Pipelines: You’ll ship database migrations using SQLAlchemy and Alembic against our production MySQL databases.
  • AI Features: We’re building out cool, AI-assisted features using LangChain and document embedding pipelines, and you’ll get to help design them.
  • Testing: You’ll keep things rock-solid by writing automated tests with pytest so we don’t break production.

Why this role is actually cool

  • Zero Corporate Red Tape: We make decisions fast. If you have a good idea, you can run with it.
  • Radical Transparency: We talk openly about bugs, risks, and obstacles so we can crush them together as a team.
  • The Vibe: We have a ton of fun. Refueling your energy is pretty easy when you know your daily work is literally democratizing space exploration.

What you should bring to the table

  • You know Python inside and out and have built REST APIs with FastAPI (or a similar framework).
  • You’re comfortable with relational databases (MySQL/Postgres) and ORMs like SQLAlchemy.
  • You’ve messed around with Redis (caching/pub-sub), Docker, and basic AWS stuff (S3, IAM).
  • You can read and write a bit of Node.js/JavaScript when you need to jump into our collab services.
  • You care about clean code, automated testing (pytest), and solid software design patterns.

Bonus points if you know.

(Seriously, don’t sweat it if you don’t—you can pick it up here!)

  • Real-time sync protocols (WebSockets, CRDTs).
  • Search engines like OpenSearch or Elasticsearch.
  • LLM orchestration tools like LangChain.
  • Observability tools (Sentry, Prometheus) or CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions).
