The WMAC – NWT Wildlife Biologist 1 is a full-time permanent position that supports the work of this co-management board. This position is responsible for using all sources of knowledge, including science, and traditional knowledge and local knowledge to assist the Council to meet its mandate as defined in the Inuvialuit Final Agreement (IFA). Additionally, while this position will be required to work independently and in team environments, the incumbent must develop and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with Inuvialuit community representatives, the Government of the Northwest Territories Department of Environment and Climate Change, the Canadian Wildlife Service within Environment and Climate Change Canada, and other wildlife co-management partners.

The incumbent is responsible for providing expert technical and administrative support to WMAC – NWT on all matters relating to wildlife policy, and the management, regulation, research, enforcement and administration of wildlife, habitat and harvesting for the Western Arctic Region. The incumbent will also act as the WMAC – NWT primary point of contact for information on species at risk and areas under the Council’s mandate.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of post-secondary degree in Natural Sciences, with acceptable specialization in Ecology, Biology, Wildlife Management, Environmental Studies, Environmental Sciences, Resource Management, or other fields related to the position.
  • A master’s degree in a related field is desired.
  • Minimum of three years working with Wildlife Management theory and practice, in particular conservation biology and harvest management.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and territorial legislation related to Wildlife Management, including species at risk in the NWT.
