Integral to Ultra Maritime (Ultra) Australia’s growing Sonar Program organisation, the Senior Project Manager will provide leadership and management of the assigned team in the delivery of highly complex projects and opportunities.

Primary responsibility will be for the execution of the program to deliver the Bow Sonar and Surface Ship Torpedo Defence System to the Royal Australian Navy’s Hunter Class Frigate.

In addition, projects and prospects in the Sonar Program portfolio also include sustainment of Ultra’s Integrated Sonar System (ISS) in service on the Hobart Class; the Royal New Zealand Navy’s Surface Ship Torpedo Defence System; Expendable and Towed Torpedo Countermeasures; and furtherance of the Integrated Undersea Battlespace. You will be engaged in new and evolving sonar system technologies and solutions while collaborating with Ultra’s global network, reaching into the Ultra UK, Canadian and the US Lines of Business.

The Senior Project Manager is responsible for ensuring that project outcomes and objectives are achieved to budget, schedule, and quality standards, whilst ensuring Customer satisfaction and the further development of Ultra’s people, products, processes and tools.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Positive and proactive situational leadership of the project team.
  • Management of the delivery of highly complex projects and coordination of project progress and issues with key stakeholders, including Customers, senior managers and executives.
  • Experience in leadership and management of high value, complex Defence Acquisition programs.
  • Ability to execute programs with autonomy in achieving project success, using escalation where and when appropriate.
  • Definition, development and execution of plans and activities to achieve project objectives and outcomes.
  • Customer focus and ownership of Customer relationships.
  • Proficiency in project management disciplines, including Scheduling, Finance, Subcontracts, Risk and Opportunity.
  • Planning, monitoring and control of project costs to achieve budget expectations and preparation of monthly financial and project status reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Behaviours that align with and promote UM’s Alignment, Integrity, and Transparency values.

About you

You’ll bring high levels of personal motivation and drive, combined with:

  • Significant years of experience and success on high complexity programs.
  • Tertiary qualification in Engineering, Science or Business (or equivalent).
  • A calm adaptive approach to managing changing priorities whilst delivering to program commitments.
  • Situational leadership skills to enable effective influencing of the project team and senior level leaders and customers.
  • Experience in management of complex international and domestic subcontracts.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of PMBOK Project Management principles and performance management frameworks, including AS4817 Earned Value Management system and processes.
  • An ability to perform excellently in all areas of Program Management: scheduling, budgeting/cost control, financial reporting, interpersonal skills and customer relationships.
  • A commitment to development and mentoring of direct reports and a desire for them to succeed and progress.
  • Familiarity and proficiency in PM tools and software, including MS Project or Open Plan Professional, MS Word, MS Excel, Risk Predict (or equivalent).
