Summary of Job Duties: The Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) seeks an energetic, self-motivated individual to provide creative and exemplary leadership for Agricultural and Laboratory Safety and Compliance (Safety Officer). The successful candidate will be responsible for safety and compliance programming on 5 Research & Extension Centers (RECs) and 7 Research Stations (RSs). The Safety Officer will report to the Assistant Directors of the AES.
Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station: The AES is the research arm of the Division of Agriculture, consisting of locations in/near Fayetteville, Stuttgart, Clarksville, Kibler, Marianna, Rohwer, Batesville, Keiser, Greenfield, Hope, Savoy, and Pine Tree, AR. These locations are crucial to our efforts to help Arkansas farmers and other stakeholders adapt to rapid changes in technology, products, methods, and regulations.
Nearly 150 faculty representing nine academic departments perform research at our locations. Most faculty have academic appointments with the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, but faculty at the Forest Resources Center at the University of Arkansas-Monticello and in the Arkansas State Research Unit also hold appointments in AES.

Responsibilities: The Safety Officer will develop, organize, and implement safety and compliance training for human and physical resources at 12 research locations across Arkansas. The position will be based out of the Milo J. Shult Agricultural Research Experiment Station (AES) in Fayetteville, AR.
The Safety Officer will be responsible for safety programs for the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station including but not limited to, health training (CPR and automated external defibrillator), emergency preparedness, fire prevention, vehicle and agricultural equipment safety, laboratory safety, annual pesticide storage and shop inspections, and hazardous chemical and biohazardous waste pickup.
The incumbent will be expected to sign waste manifests, prepare and submit annual Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality waste reports, and ensure all AES locations are in compliance with federal and state programs related to environmental and hazardous waste. The Safety Officer will become proficient in using BioRaft to ensure buildings and workspaces are safe work environments and compliant with regulations. The Safety Officer will investigate all work-related accidents and prepare an annual report summarizing accidents and all mitigation/prevention measures. The successful candidate will have or obtain and maintain all relevant certifications for training and compliance duties and possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Regular and non-disruptive work attendance and the ability to develop collegial, working relationships are essential. Lifting, transporting, and handling hazardous waste containers is required. Occasional-to-frequent travel is required.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must have an earned Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline. The minimum qualifications include a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and persuasively, both orally and in writing, with staff ranging from students, professional farm/laboratory/office personnel, faculty, and administrators. A valid driver’s license is required.
Preferred Qualifications: A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline. Five or more years of experience in Environmental Health & Safety. Certifications in Red Cross CPR and AED, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Certification and/or other OSHA regulatory certifications. Prior experience in the Land Grant University System is highly desirable.
