Vice President of Finance and Accounting Job Details:

The Vice President of Finance & Accounting position reports to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and works with the senior management team to define organizational and strategic goals in conjunction with Board of Directors (BOD). Develops and maintains accounting information according to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) concerning income, expenses, assets, liabilities and capital as a basis for management planning and decision-making, and for fulfilling financial reporting requirements. Responsible for the management of various organizational functions, including financial reporting, accounting, investments, annual budget, asset/liability management, risk management, and collections.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Directs activities of the departments for which responsible, in accordance with Credit Union policy and objectives. Ensures availability of competent, qualified personnel for key positions within the credit union.
  • Maintains a cohesive, highly trained and motivated staff, sufficient to meet the needs of the Credit Union.
  • Completes performance reviews within the prescribed time frame; notes observations of employee performance, as well as, give and receive feedback from employee on the same at least quarterly.
  • Directs the financial affairs of the Credit Union, ensuring complete/accurate financial statistical, and accounting records; oversees reporting to regulatory authorities and the Board; prepares and monitors the annual Operating Budget; directs the Credit Union’s investment activities; directs and monitors the credit union’s risk position by utilizing sound ALM practices and reporting.
  • Assists the CEO in preparing short-term and long-range plans. Establishes a budget of operations and insures that budgeted goals are achieved and cost objectives are met.
  • Develops recommendations for cost efficiencies and enhancements to products, pricing, and processes by monitoring trends in operations.
  • Makes a significant contribution toward meeting the Credit Union’s operational and financial goals and objectives.
  • Formulates and recommends operating policies and objectives or changes in existing policies and objectives. Insures compliance with and implementation of approved policies and objectives.
  • Directs activities of departments to ensure compliance with the implementation of approved policies and objectives.
  • Stays knowledgeable of and complies with applicable laws and regulations, including BSA/AML and OFAC.
  • Ensures sound services and working relationships with members, with governmental bodies, key staff of important vendors, with outside services, and with the general public.
  • Promotes respect and harmonious relations among the Executive Team and with departments throughout the organization.
  • To provide informed, professional and accurate service and support to all members and associates.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Experience

  • Ten (10) years’ progressively responsible accounting experience in a financial institution or public accounting firm. Credit Union experience a plus.
  • Five years of supervisory experience required.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance required or similar field.
  • Master’s degree and CPA preferred.

Interpersonal Skills

  • The ability to motivate or influence others is a material part of the job, requiring a significant level of diplomacy and trust. Obtaining cooperation (internally and/or externally) is an important part of the job and a high level of interpersonal skills are critical to the success of this position. Work frequently involves contacts requiring considerable discussion of problems, material presentations, and resolving issues impacting departments. Must have exceptional written and oral communication skills.

Other Skills

  • Must have excellent knowledge of accounting principles and computer applications, including the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word and Powerpoint) at a minimum. Must have analytical, problem solving and interpersonal skills.

  • While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is often required to sit and use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Occasionally lift and move objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
