Macmillan Learning is seeking an Assistant Content Project Manager who leads all aspects of editorial production from manuscript to bound books for 1- and 2-color titles and ancillaries in humanities. The production-editorial processes for these projects are straightforward, though involve coordinating several threads (e.g., copyediting, composition, development review) on tight, and sometimes conflicting, schedules. The editor maintains the highest level of editorial and production quality of our ancillaries; meets schedules; coordinates efforts of teams of authors, editors, and freelancers; and controls costs within their ability to do so. Additionally, the Editor coordinates all production-editorial corrections for book reprints.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Analyzes and evaluates text manuscripts.
  • Determines content needs (such as copyediting and composition requirements).
  • Develop a production-editorial plan appropriate for the project.
  • Adapts production-editorial processes for new technology developments.
  • Collaborates with Workflow Production Manager and Production Supervisor to build and monitor the schedule and makes revisions as circumstances require.
  • Examine and approve all stages of proof, revisions, and final files for editorial accuracy and technical correctness.
  • Checks proof for design elements; Directs compositor to ensure better design layout.
  • Handle production-editorial activities for reprint corrections.
  • Handle Access Card creation and routing
  • Collaborate with development and production to gather reprint corrections.
  • Delivers reprint corrections to production supervisors, and coordinates proof review.
  • Checks and approves all correction cycles.
  • Reviews all stages of cover preparation from copy through mechanicals to printers’ proof in order to assure adherence to quality standards.
  • Supports Production Editorial with some of the following: invoice processing, copyright registration; proofreading cover mechanicals; proof and ePUB review.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated editorial skills (copyediting, proofreading) and knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style and The MLA Handbook
  • Familiarity with InDesign
  • Computer skills such as proficiency in Microsoft Word, including online editing, and Microsoft Excel; knowledge of Adobe Acrobat; Internet skills including ftp software
  • Strong ability to communicate complex information orally, in writing, and in presentation to a variety of stakeholders
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to prioritize, think critically, and problem solve
  • Willingness to adapt to changing technologies and an increasingly electronic workplace
  • Ability to thrive as a member of a book team
  • Position will require long periods of close concentration and ability to focus and multi-task in an open office environment.
  • Must be able to work overtime – more than 40 hours a week – as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years’ experience in college textbook production
  • Familiarity with book design, composition and page layout, and type specs
  • Interest in building on design knowledge and skills
  • Interest in print and media production
  • Desire to build on skills and create one’s own development and training opportunities

Salary: $42,000/year

This position is eligible for remote employment, excluding the following locations: Alaska, Arkansas, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nevada, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wyoming. Preference given to candidates in the Boston, MA and New York City, NY area. For candidates selected from our Boston, MA, and New York City, NY offices, this is a hybrid role and requires 2 days a week in the office.
