Job Summary
We are seeking a Animal Care Technician II for our Insourcing Solutions site located in Washington, DC.
The following are responsibilities related to the Animal Care Tech II:
- Review, comprehend and comply with all SOP’s and quality assurance standards pertaining to specific area.
- Monitor daily animal health and welfare while performing daily animal health observations, perform animal husbandry duties to maintain quality and health of research animals, to include: perform daily water bottle /automatic water line and cage checks; provide appropriate food and water; perform cage changing and/or cage cleaning as required; record animal health concerns per SOP and/or specified protocols.
- Maintain accurate records of animal breeding, health, water quality, and housing/isolator or support areas as required by Institute and facility.
- Maintain supplies at acceptable levels and place orders as needed, receive supplies, etc.
- Culture live feeds
- Conduct all in-house water quality tests accurately
- Perform preventative maintenance for Zebrafish life support systems and maintains all aquatic support equipment
- Effectively troubleshoots aquatic animal housing systems
- Identify, document, and report actions and findings related to daily duties as requested.
- Assist with restraint, handling and manipulation of various animal species as assigned by the facility veterinarian.
- Identify and sort animals by sex.
- Strictly follow all procedures necessary to maintain animal housing areas, including room or facility personnel entry; personnel protective equipment use, Receive, inspect and put away incoming animals.
- May be involved in strictly maintaining and following breeding and weaning procedures to ensure appropriate production levels.
The following are minimum qualifications related to the Animal Care Tech II position:
- Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) in animal or life sciences field preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of two years directly related laboratory animal experience.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
- Certification/Licensure: AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level (ALAT) preferred
