The Center for Disabilities at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine is seeking candidates to coordinate the new statewide Pediatric Mental Health Care Access (PMHCA) program activities for the Center for Disabilities. This program was developed in response to the significant mental health care needs of children and youth in South Dakota, the chronic shortage of health care and mental health professionals, and the numerous barriers to accessing care. The program will address these challenges through a comprehensive partnership across health systems, state agencies, and community-based organizations. The ultimate goal is to increase capacity to provide routine screening, diagnosis, treatment, and referral of child and adolescent behavioral health conditions in primary care settings by reducing disparities in access to behavioral health care, especially in rural and other under-served areas.

Additional responsibilities will include participating on interdisciplinary health care leadership teams, and providing direct clinical services along with clinical teaching responsibilities.

This is a full-time, 12-month position. Position is grant funded. Continuation within the position is contingent on performance and funding availability.

Required Qualification: Master’s degree in a clinical mental health field from an accredited program, and licensed/license eligible.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience working with children and adolescents with mental health needs in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience supporting children with developmental disabilities and special health care needs and their families, specifically autism spectrum disorder and related neurodevelopmental disorders.
  • Experience working within an interdisciplinary team.
  • An understanding of human development and family-centered practices.
  • Additional professional experience with clinical training, research, and supervision.
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience with grant and report writing.
  • Understanding of adult learning strategies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-starter and collaborative leader.
  • Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse set of stakeholders.
  • Experience working with Native American communities.
