The Environmental Compliance & Inspections unit oversees the enforcement of the Waters Act and the Environment Act through the monitoring and enforcement of licensed or permitted facilities and responding to reports of possible violations of the statutes. If you are interested in joining our small team… read on!Our section is seeking an individual to undertake inspections for permits issued under the Environment Act and licenses issued under the Waters Act, and to act as lead agent for spill response. Working in a small inspections unit, you’ll be called upon to work with a variety of stakeholders, industry groups, other government departments/agencies and the public.   • Degree or diploma, from a recognized post-secondary institution, in Natural Resources Law Enforcement, Conservation and Environmental Law Enforcement, Natural Resource Protection, Resource Management Officer Technology or related field.
  • Considerable experience in a compliance and enforcement role for environmental legislation that requires conducting inspections, reporting, interpreting legislation and completion of investigations that may result in imposition of penalties.
  • Working knowledge of law, law enforcement, court procedures, legal documents and processes.
  • Considerable experience responding to complaints or educating the public on matters related to regulatory compliance.

Asset you can bring to the position, (or experience you will gain in the role):

  • Experience responding to spills and/or environmental emergencies.
  • Practical experience using sampling techniques (soil/water) and best practices for industrial/commercial waste management or contaminated sites; and
  • Knowledge of the Yukon Environment Act and Waters Act and regulations would be an asset.

Candidates with related post-secondary education and considerable experience as outlined above will be given equal consideration.Desired Knowledge, Skills and Suitability:Candidates should have, and may be assessed on:

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to build effective relationships and work collaboratively with others.
  • Critical thinking to address situations, organize facts, define a problem and develop effective solutions and complex problem solving.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work effectively in a setting with numerous and changing priorities.
  • Ability to apply risk-based enforcement and compliance strategies; and
  • Understanding of authorities, regulations, and legislation.

Conditions of Employment:Valid Class 5 Yukon driver’s license (or equivalent), and Standard First Aid or ability to acquire within 6 months.Job Requirements:Wearing and maintaining a uniform. The incumbent is required to travel frequently, including to regional communities or remote locations, to conduct scheduled and unscheduled inspections, attend emergency spills without notice and travel to remote locations to conduct compliance monitoring and inspections.
